Hello and welcome back to my blog! Today I’m continuing my series of my 10 favourite songs from musicals. So far I’ve covered Frozen, Wicked, Mean Girls and I’ve already done a list for Hamilton but as I mentioned in that post, it’s too hard to just pick 10 so today I’ll be sharing my 10 Favourite Hamilton Songs #2. As you know if you’ve read some of my theatre-related posts, I adore Hamilton, I think it’s absolutely brilliant. So, let’s get into my second 10 favourite Hamilton songs which aren’t in a particular order. P.S, there will be spoilers for the show but as it’s based on real life, I don’t think you can really have spoilers…
1. Guns and Ships
So honestly, this has become one of my favourite songs because I’m still trying to learn the rap. I mean, I know it in my head but I can’t move my mouth quick enough to say it. It also showcases the incredible talent of Daveed Diggs who plays Lafayette for this song (and act 1, he’s Thomas Jefferson in act 2).
2. Alexander Hamilton
This is the song that kicks off the whole show. To me, it’s sort of a nod to the prologue in Romeo and Juliet, we find out how the story ends right at the beginning and I love it introduces Hamilton, explains where he came from and how he got where he is etc. I also love how all of the characters sort of say a line about how they know Hamilton in the “We fought with him, Me? I died for him, Me? I trusted him, Me? I loved him And me? I’m the damn fool that shot him” (spoiler!) section.
3. You’ll Be Back
Ah, King George. I love King George, I think his performance and songs are genius. He’s on stage for a total of 9 minutes (I think) in a two and a half hour production and he’s one of the most popular characters which shows the brilliance of him. You’ll Be Back is the first of his three songs which all follow the same tune and he just pops up now and again throughout the show. The lyrics of this song are quite dark, like when he says “I will kill your friends and family to remind you of my love” but the tune and how he sings it make it sound so sweet.
4. Ten Duel Commandments
I adore the Ten Duel Commandments and I think it may be one of the most clever songs in the show. It explains the 10 rules of a duel and the correct way to fight and I don’t really know what else to say other than like most of the songs I’ve mentioned in the last post and this post, it’s genius.
5. The Schuyler Sisters
I’ll keep this one short, there are 3 reasons I love this song, the first is it’s super catchy, secondly, GIRL POWER!! and thirdly, “You want a revolution? I want a revelation So listen to my declaration: “We hold these truths to be self-evident That all men are created equal” and when I meet Thomas Jefferson, I’m ‘a compel him to include women in the sequel! Work!”.
6. The World Was Wide Enough
This song is the penultimate song in the show and sort of a spin of Ten Duel Commandments. (Spoiler) it’s the song where Hamilton is shot so you get the first part of the song from how Burr sees things then the next part is Hamilton basically having his life flash before his eyes and thinking how he will die and finally you get Burr’s reaction to how things ended up. It’s a beautiful song and like every other song, it’s so well written. There’s a cut version of this song which I also love (you can listen to that here)
7. Dear Theodosia
This one really is one of the more beautiful songs in the show. It’s sung by Aaron Burr and Hamilton to/about their babies and how they will try and make the world a better place for them to grow up in so that they can do what they need to do when they grow up. It’s a really emotional song and always makes me tear up when I listen to it.
8. Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)
I love the storytelling in this song. I love how the characters all come together to fight for their country and how they tell the story of what happened. This musical really is more incredible when you remember it’s all based on real life and these things actually happened.
Another super clever song. I love the end of this more than the beginning because I really love the overlap of all the characters singing lines from different songs. I always love songs like that, I mentioned this reason for one of the songs on my list of favourite songs from Frozen too, I don’t know why I love it so much, I just do! This song really shows how incredibly hard working Hamilton was and his determination when they’re talking about the essays he wrote.
10. Washington On Your Side
I wrote the songs for this list back in July and now that I’ve come to write the reasons I’m not really sure why this song is on the list! The only reason I can think of is that it has one of my favourite lines in the show which is “Southern motherfuckin’ Democratic-Republicans!”
