The Musical Theatre Tag

Hello and welcome back to my blog! On Sunday in honour of Tony Awards day, I decided to do the Musical Theatre Song Challenge and thought I’d carry on the theme so today I’m doing to Musical Theatre Tag. I was so shocked with the winners at the Tony Awards, I really wanted Mean Girls to do well because it’s incredible. It was nominated for a whopping 12 awards and won zero and I just can’t believe that! The one I’m most annoyed about is Taylor Louderman not winning because she does a phenomenal job as Regina! Anyways… on to the musical theatre tag!

*Hamilton spoiler alert!*

1. What was the first musical you ever saw?

Both the first film musical and stage musical I saw (not counting Disney films) was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. It’s one of my favourites to this day, I’ve seen it countless times on stage.

2. What was your favourite musical growing up?

I would probably say Joseph but I also loved Annie and Sound of Music.

3. Were you ever in a musical?

No! I’m completely talentless and hate attention/people looking at me. It would be my worst nightmare!

4. What was the first musical you saw on Broadway?

I’ve never seen one but it’s my absolute DREAM to go to NYC and watch a show on Broadway!

5. If you could be any female character in any musical who would you be and why?

Is this a character I would play or actually want to be in real life? If it’s someone I would want to be it would probably be Elle Woods from Legally Blonde. I love the film and the musical is incredible! I just think she’s an amazing role model and breaks the stereotype that blondes are stupid. She also loves pink so I’m halfway there! If it’s someone I would want to play in a musical (and I didn’t have the issues mentioned in number 3) I would want to play so many people! Elsa in Frozen, Elphaba in Wicked, Regina or Karen in Mean Girls, Angelica in Hamilton… I could probably go on!

6. Which male character?

Again, if it’s someone I would want to be in real life I would want to be Alexander Hamilton. He was so ambitious and hard-working and didn’t let anything stop him from achieving his dreams. If it’s someone I would want to play I’d say any male character in Hamilton. King George would be fun! I also love George Washington, Thomas Jefferson/Lafayette or Hamilton. I think Fiyero in Wicked, Judas or Jesus from Superstar would all be good too!

7. Favourite musical song to sing in the shower?

Say No To This from Hamilton. I try and sing all the parts, Hamilton, Maria Reynolds, Aaron Burr and James Reynolds! But then you get the big ones like Defying Gravity, Let It Go, World Burn that I just LOVE and are perfect to sing in the shower!

8. Who is your favourite theatre actress?

Idina Menzel!!!!! I also love Joanne Clifton. She was a professional on Strictly but her last series was 2016 and since then she’s been in a couple of musicals. I’ve been lucky enough to see two of her shows, Thoroughly Modern Millie which was phenomenal and Flashdance.

9. Actor?

I don’t really have a favourite actor but Tim Minchin and Ben Forster were phenomenal in Superstar, Lucas Rush was incredible in Millie and Will Young was brilliant in Cabaret.

10. Favourite film adaptation of a musical?

Mamma Mia. I love the film of Mamma Mia it’s my absolute FAVEEEE!!

11. What do you think is the most underrated musical?

Based on the film, Into The Woods. I haven’t seen the stage production but I loved the film! Also, I think a lot of the older musicals are underrated now like Sound of Music, Singin’ In the Rain etc. People just don’t seem to watch them anymore which is a shame because they’re classics!

12. Overrated musical?

Rocky Horror again, based on the film. I just don’t get it.

13. What musical made you cry?

Most recently, Mamma Mia. I watched the film (for the 100000th time) and the scene where Sophie asks Donna to walk her down the aisle and they sing Slipping Through My Fingers. I don’t know why I cried, I’ve never cried in that film before! In the theatre, I’ve cried at the end of both Millie and Flashdance because I was just so proud of Joanne! Since writing this, I watched Hamilton again and even though I’m not a Philip fan, I cry everytime he dies and John Laurens! I love Anthony Ramos ❤ and feel so bad that someone dies twice in a show haha.

14. What musical made you laugh?

So many! Mean Girls, Hamilton (I watched both on youtube), Crazy For You, Mamma Mia, literally almost all of them!

15. Are there any musicals you saw and hated?

Hate is a strong word but I really didn’t like The Producers or Barnum. I also didn’t really like the film of West Side Story but absolutely LOVED it when I saw a local production!

16. What musical do you want to see as a film?

Hamilton, Mean Girls (the musical version), Wicked (2019 people!!), Legally Blonde (the musical version). Honestly, just all the musicals I love so that I can watch them over and over! I would probably prefer actual recordings of the stage shows though because it’s a totally different feeling to a real film. See Jesus Christ Superstar Live (2018) and something like Hairspray Live or Grease Live to know what I mean.

17. Which musicals are you dying to see?

I know I keep mentioning it but Hamilton is top of my list! I’m also dying to see Mean Girls and Frozen. Others I want to see are Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, School of Rock, Shrek, Matilda, and Dear Evan Hansen.

18. Any movie or book you think should be turned into a musical?

100% The Greatest Showman. I would LOVE to see a concert version or a musical of that one, it was phenomenal! Another one I think would be brilliant as a stage musical is La La Land! I also think Clueless would be a great musical! We have Heathers and Mean Girls, now we need Clueless!

19. What is your all-time favourite musical?

I haven’t even seen it in person yet but Hamilton. Joseph also has a special place in my heart!
