Blogmas Day 6: Christmas Day Game Ideas

Welcome to day 6 of my first ever Blogmas! Every year, my family gets together over Christmas as most families do and in the evening, we play some games which is one of my favourite things to do over Christmastime so today, I thought I would tell you some of the games we play every year and maybe you’ll decide to use some of these to play with your families.

1. Guess Who

Now, this isn’t Guess Who the board game with the little plastic things you flick up and down. In this version, you write down the name of a celebrity and someone holds it on their head and then they ask a series of yes or no questions to try and guess who the celebrity is. We always have so much fun with this game, especially when my brother and I take over and write all the names, one year, we wrote our cat’s name for our mam to guess to try and trick her but she did eventually get it😂.

2. Heads Up

I often see this game being played on the Ellen Degeneres Show but we’ve never actually played it at Christmas but I’ve been wanting to for a few years now (maybe this year is the year) but I have played it with my friends at uni a few times in the cafe in between lectures and it was hysterical, probably because we were in a cafe screaming clues at each other. If you don’t know, Heads Up is an app you can get for your phone/tablet/iPad and you hold it over your head and you either have to act something out, give verbal clues and I think there’s even a round where you do accents/impressions so there is something for everyone with this game!

3. Pointless

Everyone in my family watches Pointless so we love this game. A few years ago now my mam picked up this game in Marks and Spencer for £5 or something (they always have loads of similar quiz type games like TV in the 70s, 80s and 90s etc so it’s worth getting a couple and they’re not too expensive either) and it’s just a pack of cards with a category/question and a list of answers with how many points they are on the other side and we usually play in pairs and work our way through the cards until we get bored really. This year, I picked up The Chase, Million Pound Drop and Catchphrase as they were on offer in M&S so I’m looking forward to playing them this year.

4. Name That Tune

Last year, we bought name that tune, it came with 4 kazoos and some cards and each card had 3 songs on each for either 1, 2 or 3 points, you then choose which one you want to play and the team with the most points at the end wins. Obviously, with this game, you want to pick a song that not only you know but also the people on your team, I found that choosing the ones worth one or two points worked better because they were easier so we built up the points whereas sometimes, the songs worth 3 points were too hard to guess so you didn’t get any points #strategy.

5. Quiz

We have a quiz at Christmas time almost every year and it’s always done by me. It’s so easy to do a quiz, you can pick any category or do a mixture which is what I do. One year I did film/TV, music, history, geography and of course, Christmas and then just found a few questions online from each category and that’s it! There are also loads of quizzes you can find online and you could just use one of those if you didn’t want to put the effort into making your own.

There we have it, some of the games I play at Christmastime with my family. I hope this helps you find some entertainment for Christmas Day! Let me know if you try any of these or if you have any suggestions for games you play, I’d love to hear them so let me know down in the comments! If you missed yesterday’s post, you can read that here.

Thanks for reading, Em xo
