Strictly 2017: Blackpool Special

This week was one of my favourite weeks of Strictly – BLACKPOOL WEEK! It’s a chance for the couples to really show what they can do on that massive dancefloor and it always either makes people better or it makes them worse, I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the size of the place, maybe it’s the springy dancefloor but this wasn’t my favourite Blackpool show. Anyway, let’s get to discussing the couples.

Mollie and AJ – 8
I feel really bad for these two, they’ve had a tough couple of weeks with being in the dance-off 2 weeks in a row and having so much criticism from the judges and now this week, what I think could have been a really incredible dance was quite underwhelming because of the stupid song choice. It was too slow for a Charleston and it just didn’t fit the dance style at all. However, I do think they did a pretty good job considering the stupid music choice – she had the swivel going and the lifts were very impressive but they do look a bit heavy, I don’t know if it’s still Mollie’s core or if AJ just isn’t that strong, maybe it’s because they’re similar heights, who knows? But a great effort from these two!

Susan and Kevin – 6
As much as I adore Susan and Kevin, and I wanted this to be so good because Kevin has been waiting 5 years to do it but it just wasn’t. She’s so tiny and looked even smaller on that huge floor with the extra dancers and everything. She needed more shaping and it was too stompy but I loved the flamenco section when the music stopped and they were dancing to the claps. I really don’t understand why Kevin hasn’t been allowed to do this before, it could have been a show-stopper if he could have done it with a different partner who was technically very good, any of his last partners probably could have pulled this off phenomenally. I hope that people still voted for them, I did, as usualšŸ˜‚.

Debbie and Giovanni – 6
After I saw this performance, I was bored. Bored with the routine and with her. I think the routine only had about 50-60 seconds of samba content and honestly, I don’t know why Gio was there for most of it, he just danced off to the side and it didn’t make any sense to me. She lacked bounce in the little bit of Samba that she did and it was seriously, as always over-marked.

Jonnie and OtiĀ – 6
I wasn’t a fan of this but it’s a difficult one to judge. His bum does stick out A LOT which shouldn’t be done in ballroom, especially Tango but I know that he needs to do it for balance. I also think that he was leaning forward too much in the top which ruined the v shape. He was down in the knees which is good but I still think he’s too stompy.

Gemma and Aljaz – 9
I loved this dance, it was quite understated for Blackpool which was a nice change. I think the lifts were a little repetitive but I understand because of her rib injury they didn’t want to have clumsy awkward lifts like they had a few weeks ago. I’m so glad that she’s improving and I hope this is the dance that turns it around for her like Davood’s American Smooth a couple of weeks ago!

Davood and NadiyaĀ – 9
I loved this music choice, it was perfect for the dance! I loved the drama, the energy and it was packed with content! I really wasn’t a fan of these two until their American Smooth but since then, they have been growing on me every week and getting better and better!

Alexandra and GorkaĀ – 9
This was the perfect dance for Blackpool and perfect for her – all showy and full of performance. She needs to work on her feet because they’re still pigeon-toed which I think I mention almost every week. This dance was full of content and the sort of old-Hollywood glamour is my favourite type of quickstep so as much as I’m not a fan of them, I did like this dance.

Joe and KatyaĀ – 8
I loved this, it was high energy, full of content and the lifts were excellent but I do think that last trick went a bit wrong and she was supposed to stop halfway down his body but I’m not sure. Joe is another one who gets better every week! I’m so pleased for Katya, I think she did an incredible job with Ed last year and now an even better job with Joe!

The Result
I 100% think the dance-off and the eliminated couple was right this week, I wasn’t surprised at all. It shows now that now Debbie isn’t at the top of the leaderboard, she hasn’t got the support of the public which as nasty as it sounds, I’m glad about because I don’t want her to win (or Alexandra). I think it was the right time for Jonnie to go, he hasn’t been improving and I think he could have gone a few weeks back. People are saying that he shouldn’t have gone because of his disability and he’s doing a good job or whatever but I don’t think that should be an excuse, don’t people with a disability just want to be treated like everyone else? I do think that he did an amazing job and showed that you can still do something even when you have a disability so well done to Oti for teaching him so well!

What did you think of this week’s performances? Did the right couple go home? I’d love to know what you think in the comments! If you missed my post on week 8, you can read thatĀ here.
