Strictly 2017: Halloween Special

Usually, I’m not a fan of Halloween but I do love a themed week on Strictly because it changes it up a bit. I think Halloween either makes the couples step up their game or it’s a hindrance to them and this year was no exception so let’s get to discussing each performance.

Jonnie and Oti – 6
I could see that he was trying to get the snap in the straight legs for this cha cha but I think he was quite stompy throughout and the dance was quite messy. I did like the thing they did with the arms when Oti was behind him and then the hip wiggle thing, I thought that was quite good but he needs to work on his legs and feet.

Ruth and Anton – 6
I thought this was light and fun and Ruth did the Bewitched nose wiggle really well! I liked the opening and the concept of this dance and I feel that Ruth is finally looking like she’s enjoying herself which is great to see! There was some gapping on occasion but I really enjoyed this dance!

Simon and Karen – 5
I wasn’t a fan of this dance at all which is hard for me to say because I love these two. It took a little while to get started but I understand that the music had quite a long intro and he didn’t have the drive in the legs which is needed for this dance. I think they did well for the limited training they had and because of his injury.

Gemma and Aljaz – 6
I think I was watching a completely different dance to the judges. It looked messy in places and wasn’t consistent at all. I think the kicks started off good, then she got a bit tired, then they picked up again but when they were good, they were tachnically good because she was kicking down instead of out (I think I mentioned that last week for Brian but the opposite) and her body weight was over her feet which meant she got a better retraction but I didn’t really like this dance and think it’s her weakest since week 1. I hope they can come back from it because they are one of my favourite couples.

Joe and Katya – 9
I LOVED the concept of this dance, it was so creepy and clever, Katya is a really wonderful choreographer. The opening was gorgeous with Katya moving very spider-like towards Joe and then him spinning while she was dragging him and those pivots have got to be some of the fastest-moving pivots I’ve ever seen. I think his frame may have suffered because of the web chain thing on his shoulders and chest but this was one of my favourites of the night.

Mollie and AJ – 7
Firstly, Mollie looked incredible in that costume, hair and make-up, I loved it! In regards to the dance, I think she did well at trying to straighten her legs and I don’t really know what the judges were talking about with these two, I think they did great!

Alexandra and Gorka – 8
This was full of attack and I loved the bit where she stayed still in hold and he walked around her. She had flexed knees the whole time which is very good but for me, she’s a really messy dancer in her legs and I think she’s over-marked every week after her Paso, especially that jive.

Davood and Nadiya – 7
There wasn’t much rumba content in this but I loved the concept of him dancing with a ghost and then she was gone, so clever and imaginative. I don’t understand how she got from the top of the stairs to walking from behind him in 4 seconds, the first bit must have been pre-recorded or something. He wobbled a bit on his knee spin but the acting was wonderful. I would have liked to see some more rumba content but as it’s a theme week I don’t mind so much.

Susan and Kevin – 6
Her face as she came down on that dragon is my favourite thing, I say it every week but they are my favourites and they’re just so joyful and make me smile every time they dance and this week was no exception. Also, Kevin looks like he’s having the time of his life dressed as John Snow😂. The singers absolutely murdered this song (quite fitting for Halloween). The boop on Kev’s nose was adorable, the dance was super cute but still a lot to work on technically but I just love them and I find it hard to criticise them🙈. I loved the ending and her laugh at the end just shows how much she’s loving the whole experience. Also, I probably would have done a paso to the Game of Thrones theme song and just gone all out for this week and I loved how Kevin responded to Shirley’s comment!

Debbie and Giovanni – 9
This was technically very strong but it didn’t deserve 10s at all because 2 of the lifts were terrible, like really not good at all and it looked like she almost fell over at one point but her swivel was excellent and I loved this dance.

Aston and Janette – 10
I love it when they dance a Paso to a rock song like this because I feel that it makes them attack it better and this dance proved that. It was brilliant. I loved the section on the box when he was stamping out the beat, it was dramatic and danced very well as always. Janette is really topping herself with the choreography this series, they are just amazing every week.

The Results Show
I definitely think the right couple was eliminated this week, as much as I do love Simon and Karen, he was the weakest dancer in the competition but I was surprised to see that Mollie and AJ were in the dance off because they have been pretty strong in the competition so far, I really hope this will give Mollie a kick to step up her game because I think she could be really great in both Latin and Ballroom and this may be the push that they need.

What did you think of Halloween week? Did the right couple go home? I’d love to know what you think in the comments! If you missed my post on week 5, you can read that here.
