Strictly 2017: Week 5

I really enjoyed the show this week, as always. I really liked it with 3 judges instead of 4, partly because it was so calm without Bruno! You know how it works, I’m going to give my thoughts on each couple’s dance, give my scores and then discuss the dance off and eliminated celeb. Like last week, I’ll link every dance so that you can watch them if you want to.

Davood and Nadiya – 6
They need to work on his free arm, he needs to mirror her when they do steps like the New York or anything that’s side by side, it may help if she dances down a little so that it makes him look better, I think a few of the pros need to do that. I liked the energy and he tried getting the leg action by putting his body weight over his feet which is good.

Mollie and AJ – 8
I loved this dance, she looked gorgeous in the dress with her hair and everything it was really lovely. They didn’t have any gapping issues and I loved the beginning (and the middle and the end) but it did take a little while for the dance to start, however, I feel like AJ was kind of forced to do it like that because the music took a little while to start properly but I really loved it.

Simon and Karen – 5
This dance was so fun, I really enjoyed it but technically, it wasn’t the best. There was no swivel but you could see he was trying to do it and he was always a tiny bit behind Karen. I think they could have chosen music that was a little slower because it felt like he was trying to catch up the entire dance almost but, not their fault. As of this week, every Clifton has danced to a song from Singin’ In The Rain which I think is so funny – Kevin did the quickstep with Susanna Reid to Good Morning and Jo did that fabulous American Smooth with Ore last year and now Karen and Simon did this Charleston to Fit as a Fiddle.

Debbie and Giovanni – 8
I really enjoyed this dance and I think they danced it beautifully. I kind of think it’s cheating having cha-cha and rumba straight after each other because it’s sort of the same walk as in you have straight legs and hip action so it’s almost as if she’s been able to train for 2 weeks on her legs. She did wobble towards the end as she was walking away but she is technically brilliant.

Brian and Amy – 5
I loved Brian’s faces through this, he’s so entertaining but this dance wasn’t his best. He was sort of kicking out instead of down like Amy was doing and his kicks weren’t very sharp at all and there was no retraction. I did love the nod to Carlton from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air at the beginning!

Susan and Kevin – 6
For me, Susan is the joy of this competition, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone so happy, I smile every time I watch them perform. I loved the story behind this dance but her legs weren’t straight like they should be in this dance. I love how she kind of stands there sometimes with her arms out waiting for Kevin, I think she’s so sweet and this is one of my favourite partnerships ever on Strictly.

Aston and Janette – 9
I loved everything about this dance (except for his outfit). The song was gorgeous, the dance was beautiful and these two are unstoppable. I honestly don’t know what else to say.

Ruth and Anton – 5
I loved seeing Ruth’s fun side but my favourite thing without a doubt was Anton’s outfit (2nd outfit) I just didn’t see the costume change coming😂 how did they get Anton’s sleeves inside that jacket?! I think they went wrong about 3/4 of the way through but I could see Ruth trying to get the bounce action in which was good to see.

Gemma and Aljaz – 9
This is another one where I just loved everything, I thought the song was beautiful and so different from the original. Gemma is becoming one of my favourites in the competition, I think she’s wonderful, she’s quietly getting better and isn’t super in your face good like Alexandra and Aston which I love.

Joe and Katya – 10
I loved the beginning of this with the shaping, almost like a silhouette, it was very clever of Katya. His knee walks were so good, his lines and shaping, attitude, everything was brilliant, I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen when this was on!

Alexandra and Gorka – 8
I loved the glow in the dark dress at the beginning, I’ve never seen that on Strictly before I don’t think so that was really cool. I thought this last week in her Jive too but her legs and footwork is very messy but she is an excellent dancer.

Jonnie and Oti – 8
This was light and fun and technically quite good, they didn’t have any issues with gapping which a lot of couples struggle with. His right elbow does drop a little but other than that he kept a good frame. I loved the second of jive at the end, it was different and a clever way to finish the dance.

The Dance Off
This has been the closest dance-off yet, I really love Simon and Karen so I probably would have agreed with the judges as Brian made a few mistakes, as did Simon but Simon’s dance was a little more advanced which is why I would have given him the edge over Brian. I will miss him and Amy, I really hope she would do it for us Welshies but there’s always next year!

What did you think of week 5? Did the right couple go home? I’d love to know what you think in the comments! If you missed my post on week 4, you can read that here.
