Review: Crazy for You (Starring Tom Chambers and Caroline Flack)

On the 9th September, I saw Crazy for You at the Wales Millennium Centre and I loved it. It’s the story of an old theatre in a small town in Nevada that’s under threat of being taken over by the bank. Bobby, the son of a wealthy banking family is sent to close the theatre but falls in love with Polly, the daughter of the theatre owner. Disguised as the Hungarian impresario, Bela Zangler, Bobby attempts to save the theatre by putting on a show.

Tom Chambers as Bobby Child

Now, we all knew that Tom Chambers could act and dance, but I didn’t know how well he could sing or how funny he was. His physical comedy is brilliant and one of my favourite moments was when Bobby was drunk and he couldn’t find the stairs to get down from the balcony so he slowly lowers himself down by a rope which doesn’t sound very funny or entertaining but it really was!

Caroline Flack as Irene Roth

I was a little disappointed with how little Caroline was actually in the show. She had one song and was only in a few scenes and I was very surprised that she didn’t have a dance number because she was so good on Strictly. It just felt a little bit of a waste not to include her dancing talents in a show that had so much dancing in it. BUT, she was very funny as the domineering ex-fiance of Bobby and she had a very good voice – I could definitely see her in a leading role in the future!

Charlotte Wakefield as Polly Baker

I had never heard of Charlotte Wakefield before seeing this production and I honestly don’t know why she hasn’t made it big yet. She was absolutely incredible. Her acting was amazing, her dancing was incredible and her voice was gorgeous and so powerful. She was also very funny and stole the show for me. I can’t wait to see what else she does after this.
  Crazy for you programme

Crazy for You featured one of the most talented casts I’ve ever seen who not only sing, dance and act but also act as the orchestra by playing their instruments on stage which was something I’d never seen before. The show was packed with music by the Gershwin Brothers with hits including I Got Rhythm, They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Nice Work if You Can Get It and the costumes of Irene and the Follies Girls were amazing! Who could ask for anything more?

The show is touring into (I think) into March/April 2018 so I would definitely recommend getting tickets if it’s coming to your town/city! If you liked this post, you might also like my other reviews which you can find here.
