How to Make a Candle

In today’s post, I’ll be showing you how to make a candle. Before I get started, I should note I am not a professional candle maker, I just like making things!

You will need:

  • A Pyrex (glass) jug
  • Wax (I used soy wax and a bit of an old candle)
  • Wicks
  • Jars/Pots – I just used some pots that used to have candles but you can also use a mug/teacup
  • Pencils
  • Tape
  • Something to stir the melting wax, I used a skewer but you could use a chopstick or a pencil
  • Wax melts/a candle to give your candle a smell and colour (you could also use fragrance oils instead)
  • Saucepan that’s big enough to hold your jug

Step 1

Set a saucepan of water to boil (put your jug in the pan while you fill it so you know you won’t overflow the pan when you put your jug in later)

Step 2

Make sure your jars are clean and dry, wax and water doesn’t mix

Step 3

Measure out the wax you need by filling your selected jar twice with the flakes of wax (you need double the flakes per jar). If you are adding an old candle or some melts to your candle, add fewer flakes

Step 4

When the water is boiling, put the jug in the pan but use oven gloves to protect your hands from burning

Step 5

Add your smells/colours by adding your candle or melts (I used both)

Step 6

Leave your wax to melt stirring occasionally

Step 7

While you’re waiting, add your wick to your jar and keep it in place with two pencils and some tape (I used a peg to start with but then realised it wasn’t big enough so go to step 9 to see how)

Step 8

Once Your wax is melted (it should look like this↓), remove it from the pan (again, use oven gloves because it will be very hot)

Step 9

Pour it into your jar, leaving a gap of about 1cm between the top of the jar and the wax and avoid the tape if possible

Step 10

Let your wax dry. When it’s dry, it may have a crack like one of mine did but don’t worry, it will disappear when it’s been used). I had some left over so I added it to another jar and I’ll add another colour next time. When the candle had cooled, trim the wax to about 1cm above the wax.
