Review: Road To The Royal Albert Hall by Collabro

Review: Road To The Royal Albert Hall by Collabro

Hello, welcome back to my blog! Today is an exciting day for me because I received a package in the post this morning and it was Road To The Royal Albert Hall by Collabro! I’ve been waiting months for this, I preordered it a while ago so I’m really excited it’s finally here and I can’t wait to listen to it! I decided to do something a bit different today, it’s a review but I’m reviewing each song as I’m listening to the album. I thought it would be the best way to get my first reactions to each song so let’s get to it!

1. Grease from Grease

So, Collabro aren’t really known for singing upbeat songs and I was a little worried about what they would do with this song but I think it’s such a fun song to start the album with, I really enjoyed it!

2. As If We Never Said Goodbye from Sunset Boulevard

I’m not usually the biggest fan of this song, I find it quite long and boring but I absolutely love Collabro’s version. It sounds like classic Collabro, the harmonies are incredible as always! I’m actually tearing up at this song and we’re only on number 2!

3. Maria from West Side Story

Again, I’m not the biggest fan of this song either because I find it quite repetitive but oh my, I have chills from the beginning of it with just them and the piano, it’s almost haunting and so so beautiful! I wasn’t a huge fan of the middle because of the repetitiveness but the end note gave me chills again! Regardless of my feelings towards the song, the boys sang it incredibly as always.

4. Electricity from Billy Elliot

My first thought when I heard this song was thank goodness they’re not doing the accent! I really really love this version, I always think Collabro are at their best when they all come together in the belting harmony bits and this song has a few of those moments and they always make me cry!

5. On My Own from Les Miserables

Oh, Jamie! I love Jamie’s voice so much, I could actually listen to him sing all day! For me, this song doesn’t really get good until about 2 minutes in when the boys come together, it’s my favourite part of this song.

6. Why God Why from Miss Saigon

This is the only song on the album I wasn’t familiar with. I don’t really know Miss Saigon at all and I don’t think I had even heard a song from the show until last year on Collabro’s Home album when they sang Bui Doi and it’s one of my favourite Collabro songs! I’m a little confused with this song, I loved the beginning, it started as a ballad, then about 2 minutes in it gets more upbeat which I wasn’t expecting then goes back to being a ballad but I really liked it!

7. Don’t Cry For Me Argentina from Evita

I really enjoyed this song, all the way through it I was thinking this is nice, they’re doing a lovely job with this one and then the end came and there was this note I was not expecting! I actually gasped I LOVED the end!!!

8. Never Enough from The Greatest Showman

When I heard that there would be a song from The Greatest Showman on the album, of course, I was hoping for This Is Me, my absolute fave but I think this probably works better for the boys (although I’d love to hear them sing This Is Me!). I really enjoyed this version of the song, the harmonies as always are on point!

9. Defying Gravity from Wicked

I’ve been waiting for this song FOR YEARS! I always said how much I would love to hear Collabro sing Defying Gravity, it’s one of my all time favourite songs and when they performed it on their tour earlier this year I was beyond excited and I’m so happy there’s now a real recording of it! (I’m now going to listen to it). Oh wow wow wow this did not disappoint!!! There are harmonies in there when you’re not expecting it which were amazing then, in the last 2 minutes, the song gets a bit faster then there’s the belt then there’s Jamie then there’s me beaming because I loved it so much and crying because I loved it so much. I’m so confused but I LOVED IT!!!! That’s absolutely my favourite song on the album!!!

10. Jersey Boys Medley from Jersey Boys

Here we go, I’m excited about this one! Again, this was another one from their tour earlier in the year and it was the final song of the night and had me leaving the show on a high which I always love so it’s the best one to finish the album on but just not as good as seeing it live because you can’t see the boys dancing on an album! I did actually prefer the live version though I think because I just feel like there was just more energy when the boys performed it live but I still really loved it on the album.

Final Thoughts

I really loved Road To The Royal Albert Hall by Collabro but Defying Gravity was hands down my favourite song! I also really loved As If We Never Said Goodbye and Electricity. This album has made me so excited to see them live again and I’m so sad I need to wait until April for that but at least now I have the album to keep me going until then! I always think Collabro are better live than they are on a recording which really is a testament to how incredible their voices are but their albums still never disappoint, this is the 4th one now and they are always so consistent, I can’t wait for number 5!
