Review: Mamma Mia 2 (Spoiler Free)

Mamma Mia 2

Hello and welcome back to my blog! I thought I would do a sort of spontaneous post today and share with you my thoughts on Mamma Mia 2. I’ve seen the film twice already and I had very different experiences both times I saw it so I’m not going to ramble on so let’s just get to it.

Mamma Mia 2

Mamma Mia is my absolute favourite film, I love it so much. I must have seen it over 20 times, I can quote the film and the songs I adore it. When I heard they were making Mamma Mia 2, so many thoughts went through my mind: Is it the same cast? I’m so excited! Why are they doing this? The first one is so good! What will they be able to do now? Will Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper be able to work together again? Just SO MANY THOUGHTS.

I forced my friend to go with me to watch it the day it came out, I couldn’t wait, I just had to see it. I tried staying away from the trailer, reading any spoilers and watching any cast interviews so going in I didn’t know much of what it was about. I knew it would feature young Donna and the dads and be a kind of sequel/prequel situation but that was about it.

As I was watching, I honestly wasn’t sure if I was enjoying it or not. At first, I didn’t enjoy the flashbacks, I thought Lily James was horrible casting, I didn’t think she could sing and the 3 young dads just made me cringe BUT I really loved the present day stuff that was going on with Sophie and the hotel etc. As the film got going a bit I did start enjoying it more and I realised Lily James had a really pretty voice and she grew on me. I loved the last maybe 30-45 minutes of the film where they have the hotel opening party thing and that part really won me over but I came out really not being sure if I liked it or not.

A week later, I went and saw it again. I had spent the past week listening to the soundtrack and the songs and new cast really started growing on me so I was excited to see it again. I was more prepared now and I knew it wasn’t going to be like the first one and the second time around, I loved it! I mean, I still prefer the first one but some of the songs in this one are just incredible. My favourites hands down are Andante, Andante, I’ve Been Waiting For You and My Love, My Life. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know that last song I mentioned is such a beautiful scene. It actually makes me cry everytime I even hear the song and it was my favourite scene in the film.

Standout Actors

As per the first film, Julie Walters stole the show. I just think she’s hilarious! I really enjoyed Lily James as young Donna but my favourite of the young characters was Jessica Keenan Wynn as young Tanya. She spoke like Christine Baranski and looked so much like her it was unreal and she was really funny! I absolutely love Amanda Seyfried as an actress, I’ve seen so many of her films, I think she’s incredible and Mamma Mia 2 is no exception. I absolutely love her singing voice as I did in the first film and her version of I’ve Been Waiting For You is just stunning.

The Soundtrack

So I’ve told you my three favourite songs from the film but I just wanted to discuss the soundtrack quickly. I really love that there’s a mixture of songs from the first film and new ones for this film. The songs they used last time were sung by different actors now which made it better because it’s not like we’re hearing the same song again exactly the same way we did before. For example, Waterloo was sung at the end of the last film by the whole cast and this time it’s part of the story and it’s sung by young Harry end Donna and there are a few like that. Dancing Queen was one of my favourites because it was done a really similar way as the first film with the cast dancing around the island so it was kind of like a tribute to the first film with the whole cast, not just the ladies.

Mamma Mia 2

After seeing it the second time around I can say I really love the film and I can’t wait to see it again. Until then, I’ll just be listening to the soundtrack dreaming of that gorgeous island!
