Well Guys and Dolls, this week is my FAVOURITE week on Strictly because it was the MUSICALS SPECIAL! I love Musicals and I love Strictly so when these two worlds collide, I am in heaven! This week did not disappoint, we saw some show-stopping routines and as usual, some under marking (Craig, I’m looking at you!). So let’s get to discussing the performances!
Gemma and Aljaz – 8
Honestly, I don’t really understand the problem with this dance! Yes, there was some gapping and maybe it could have been lighter but I thought it was great! She acted well when they were out of hold, maybe it didn’t come across as well in hold because she was concentrating on a tricky dance? I don’t know but I really enjoyed it and thought she looked incredible!
Mollie and AJ – 7
I don’t really know what to make of this one. I think Mollie is the perfect Sandy (sweet Sandy, not catsuit Sandy) so this was the best possible character they could have given her for the Musicals Special. She has improved so much but I’m starting to get a bit fed up with seeing the same two moves in EVERY dance they do. That drag thing where she puts her arms around AJ’s head and he walks backwards and the spin where she keeps one foot on the floor, it’s getting repetitive. I think there was a bit of running back and forth in the dance and the lift was unnecessary because Mollie did a really great rumba in the bits that actually was rumba.
Joe and Katya – 9
I love love love this dance! When I heard the song choice for this dance, I was so worried, like Craig, I didn’t think it would fit but Katya did an incredible job! His bounce was good and there was a lot of samba content! I went to see Cabaret a few weeks ago and Joe played the Emcee so well! I would go and see him in the show if he is ever in it because I think he would be great!
I found this dance to be quite boring but it was danced very well. I don’t think much happened with it but it is quite a simple song. And, if I’m right, she didn’t do the splits once, just dancing and no tricks which I love. I don’t think they have done a dance like this yet so it was nice to see something different from them.
I feel so bad for these two. It’s Aston all over again, a strange song choice that didn’t really fit with the dance and I think Nadiya did a good job with the choreography. I didn’t really notice Davood wobble like everyone has been saying. The lifts were great, I think he was a strong partner for Nadiya which she needs in this dance and it was nice to see the man do some dancing and not just have the lady dancing around him like a lot of the pro girls do. The leg kicks and flicks were quite complicated towards the end and I think he did a great job!
This was great, the timing was spot on! She did make a mistake or two and she lost her swivel for a second towards the end but I really liked this dance! I really hated the shoes though, I don’t feel like they fit in with the dance. On these themed weeks, I sometimes feel that the costumes get sacrificed to match with the concept/theme and not stay true to the dance style which is a shame but I still think the costume department does an incredible job!
I was quite shocked when I found out who was in the dance off. I thought Alexandra would be safe this week because she was near the top of the leaderboard, if not at the top but it just goes to show that the leaderboard and judges scores don’t matter as much anymore. It’s about who the public like and myself included, people just aren’t warming to her from what I’ve seen on social media. I feel so bad for Davood because he’s improved so much and I really hoped he would be in the final. Like I said, the same thing happened to Aston, you get a bad song/dance and you’re out but I think that he maybe was the right person to go on the night. I would have guessed it would be him and maybe Mollie in the dance off (but I did vote for Mollie this week along with Gemma and Joe).
What did you think of this week’s performances in the Musicals Special? Did the right couple go home? I’d love to know what you think in the comments! If you missed last week’s post, you can read that here and I’m also doing my very first Blogmas and you can read today’s post here, it’s a collection of my favourite Christmas TV Moments!
